Woollam Constructions have undertaken a number of redevelopment works at the Mackay Airport to ensure the facilities at the site continuously meet the required standard. Projects at the site have included a Terminal Redevelopment, Retail Redevelopment and construction of a new Baggage Handling Facility.
The Mackay Airport Redevelopment project consisted of extensions and refurbishment of the existing terminal building. An additional bay was added to the structure to allow for the relocation and expansion of the Mackay Port Authority administration offices. The departure lounge was also relocated to this new area with the addition of a series of ‘gates’ along the airside glazed wall. A mezzanine floor was also installed during this development with the consideration of the future expansion of the departure lounge and airline lounges. The refurbishment of the terminal included new common user check-in counters, replacement baggage carousels, new central water feature, new cafe, bar and rental kiosks, and the reconfiguration of signage into the walls. New flight information displays were also installed throughout the terminal.
The Mackay Airport Baggage Hall Extension was constructed to accommodate an upgraded baggage handling system that was required to meet new inline baggage screening standards for regional airports. The project also included minor refurbishment work to the airport administration offices inclusive of fire retardant works and external hardstand works. Throughout the duration of construction, the airport remained fully functional with operations unimpeded. This was achieved through daily consultation with the airport user group and Mackay Airport’s management group.
